Baker 30E, Breen-1253 variety. One of perhaps a dozen known according to Rulau.
A rare piece with the distinctive corded rim – perhaps the only edge variant on any coin in the entire colonial series that is clearly visible from the obverse and reverse (even when viewing the piece in a PCGS holder).
Notably, the strike is hammered, which is most unusual for this issue. All the detail is crisp and full including Washington’s shoulder epaulet. For comparison, the Ford collection coin was more typically struck, which is to say that it was as flat as a colonial pancake in that same spot.
Absolutely, positively, totally original, with lovely chestnut brown color, some mint red lingering in the reverse lettering, hard surfaces with underlying luster and just enough crust in the devices to indicate that this coin has not been cleaned or ‘improved’ in a couple of hundred years.
This is precisely the type of coin that is often conserved in this day and age, given a fresh, glossy new look and upgraded by the services, though we hope that the buyer of this piece will be a serious collector who preserves it, as the Norwebs did, for the next generation.
Ex-Stack’s November, 2006 sale of the Norweb Collection, lot #2036.
