M-NY-945 variety, struck for Uriah Welch.
A neat and popular issue with a bizarro hairy sea serpent / dragon on the obverse, and a more conventional it-is-actually-an identifiable-species rooster on the reverse.
Editor’s note: After writing this description, I was informed by reader G.B. that the creature on the obverse of this piece is actually a “Griffin”, which I just looked up and see defined as a “legendary creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion, the head and wings of an eagle and sometimes an eagle’s talons as its front feet”. But since the creature seen here seems to have an unceremonious pig snout and fangs, I would describe myself as unconvinced.
Whatever it is, it certainly is interesting, and the piece itself is a prooflike, silvery-blue toned RB gem.
