Adams 14.2 variety, Smallest Size at 38mm. Original horseshoe loop intact. Considered to be Rarity-7 with Adams’ estimate of 9 known (which includes 4 in institutional collections, and one which is a die trial struck in lead).
This piece can be traced to Bowers March 2001 sale of the Lucien M. LaRiviere Collection, lot 2016, where it was described as follows:
Lustrous gray with subtle rose and violet iridescence. A simply beautiful example of this finely executed Peace Medal.
This is the rarest format of this issue, dated 1814, and distributed only in that year and the year that followed; Adams cites only 9 specimens of which this is clearly the finest . . . For the person who seeks but one Peace medal, the present offering may be ideal. Its condition and utter rarity make it a very significant offering, unlikely to be repeated for some time.
That turned out to be correct, with the next offering being 21 years later, right here, right now.
