KM-Y428, L&M-609 variety.
Struck to commemorate the extensive highway network completed in China’s Kweichow Province at the time and bearing the likeness of then Military Governor Chow’s famous car, one of the first imported into the country.
Making this the first coin ever (anywhere) to bear the image of an automobile. How cool is that?
And this is a very nice, all original, sharply struck, old toned example that is about as nice as can be obtained without spending a veritable boatload of money (as would have been necessary to acquire the PCGS AU58 that brought $74,750 in a 2011 Heritage sale, and the NGC MS62 which realized $131,450 in a Stack’s-Bowers auction).
Ex Stack’s-Bowers August 2015 Hong Kong Auction, lot #52386, where it realized $22,705.
This coin is from the CRO archives and is not currently available for sale.
