Hodder 2-D, W-1070 variety.
The Latin reverse legend of this type should read CRESCITE:ET:MVLTIPLICAMINI (translated as INCREASE AND MULTIPLY), but this variant is missing the P, creating the nonsensical spelling error MVLTILICAMINI. Making it one of the great rarities in the American colonial series with just 3 known specimens as follows:
1. The Parmelee-Smith-Norweb Specimen, MS62 NGC.
2. The present specimen
3. The Newcomer-Garrett Specimen, described as VF
The piece itself is a very pleasing Choice AU with much crust in the devices and the spelling error bold and clear.
Ex Morton & Eden’s 11/2002 sale, lot #785, where it was sold raw and realized $51,616.
$49,750
