Newman 8-C, W-1175 variety, considered to be Rarity-7.
A ca. 1688 original striking, this is the interesting issue with the distinctive ‘sidewise 4’ in the denomination (Editor’s note: Eric Newman first attributed this series and identified this variety as a "Sidewise 4" in his 1964 ANS Monograph, while NGC here calls it a "Sideways 4". We’re sticking with the original Newman parlance).
And while this example has had a fairly tough life, with some dings and roughness, it is still pretty nice for this very rare issue, with relatively sharp detail, rich pewter gray color and a bold and distinct Sidewise 4.
