Judd-1638, considered to be Rarity-6 with just 12 examples known.

An incredible opportunity to acquire the rarest type coin in the entire American series.

The Coiled Hair Stella was struck only in 1879 and 1880 and the total number of surviving specimens of both dates combined is only 20 pieces! Of those, several are permanently impounded in institutional holdings or locked up in long-term collections.

Of the remaining survivors, those at the highest end of the grading spectrum have eclipsed the one million dollar mark in recent years. As such, we believe this attractive PCGS PF62 example represents exceptional value in today’s numismatic marketplace.

The coin itself is brilliant light gold in color with some subtle orange toning on both the obverse and reverse.

PCGS has conferred the grade of 62 apparently due to some light scattered hairlines and a single dark spot at 7 o’clock on the obverse which also serves to identify this piece as the Richmond collection coin.

Of note, many of the surviving examples bear similar identifying marks allowing definitive matching to past catalog plate photos.

In all, a wonderful coin, and a truly rare opportunity for the advanced collector.

Ex David Lawrence’s July 23, 2004 sale of the Richmond Collection, Part I, Lot #1304, earlier Stack’s Americana sale, January, 1998, Lot #1498 (as part of a complete Stella set and also plated on the cover of that catalog).
