Judd-628 variety, considered to be Rarity-7 with just a half dozen examples known.
Similar in design to the three cent nickels then in circulation in post-Civil War America, but here beautifully rendered in copper with exceptionally wide rims and appearing almost medal-like.
Superior in our view to the design actually chosen for the Shield Nickel (but of course everyone always says that about pattern coins).
And this is a lovely original medium brown piece with choice surfaces and mint red in the devices.
