Breen-Gillio-820, a scarce ‘shield reverse’ type struck by Robert B. Gray & Co.  Considered to be Rarity-5.

We don’t handle a lot of fractional gold coins, but we couldn’t resist this choice example of an issue that is seldom seen this nice.

Indeed, the magnificent Jay Roe collection of fractional gold coins (sold by Bowers & Merena in September, 2003) contained just an AU50 of this type.  And that very same AU50 was selected as the plate coin for the 2nd Edition of the Breen-Gilleo reference on the series.

But this coin is substantially better, with lovely proof-like surfaces and some pretty deep blue, russet and rich green toning.

While a bit soft, the strike is typical for this type, including the weak reverse due to dies which shattered and sank early on (which may also explain why this type is so hard to come by).

In all, a cool coin which is choice, rare and well under a grand, which seems like a compelling combination of attributes to us.
