In his book Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint, author and noted specialist Doug Winter estimates that of the total mintage of 14,500 pieces, just 80 – 90 of this issue survive today in all grades combined.
Of these, Winter notes that only about a dozen (that’s 12. TWELVE. T-W-E-L-V-E) retain their original skin.
And this is one of those lucky few – a crusty, golden orange example with a beautiful, original patina.
In all, a very rare piece, and in our view an excellent value in today’s numismatic marketplace.
