A lovely piece from the April 1997 sale of the Eliasberg Collection where it was described, augustly, as follows:
"MS-63, prooflike. Virtually full Proof surfaces, including within the shield stripes, as visible when the coin is held at an angle to the light. An inadvertent proof, not a presentation coin, but the net result is the same.
Light golden and gray toning with some splashes of blue at the rims, another very ‘pretty’ coin. While the 1843-O is not a rarity at the MS-63 level, coins of this aesthetic quality are certainly worth special notice and a premium."
And while PCGS has not been quite as lavish in their praise (at least at the time this one was originally graded), it is the sort of coin we are always delighted to offer on this site.
Ex Bowers’ April 1997 sale of the Louis E. Eliasberg Collection as noted, lot #1926 where it realized $2,860; earlier John H. Clapp; earlier New York Coin & Stamp Co.’s February 1899 sale of the E.W. Ropes Collection.
