A lovely example of the ‘Fat Head Five’ (as they are affectionately known by collectors), one of the rarest types in US coinage.
The gold content of this issue exceeded its face value, causing most to be exported or melted in the 1830’s, and leaving precious few for today’s collectors.
And this is literally a Museum Quality coin. Indeed, the Smithsonian boasts two examples of this date and neither piece is mint state.
This example, by contrast, is unquestionably mint state, retains its thick original golden orange ‘skin’ and has cascading mint luster on both the obverse and reverse.
A stunner, destined to be a highlight of an advanced collection.
