ESC-204 variety, Struck in Copper.
A giant crown-sized pattern piece bearing the obverse portrait of George III.
And this is among the most spectacular pieces we’ve handled, technically superb, with glowing mahogany brown color just faded from original red and highlighted with lovely toning in shades of violet, rose and lime green.
Ex Morton and Eden’s 2002 sale of the Boulton Family Collection and thus traced to Matthew Boulton, founder of the Soho Mint at which this coin was struck. Prior to that offering, this piece had remained in the family, pristine and untouched, for nearly two centuries.
This coin is from the CRO archives and is not currently available for sale.
