Overton-103 ‘Punctuated Date’ type. Considered to be Rarity-2.
So it’s 200 years ago and and an innocent mint employee stumbles and drops a screwdriver onto the obverse die of an 1817 Capped Bust Half Dollar creating a tiny void which imparts a raised dot between the 1 and 7 in the date on struck coins which will years later be identified as the Punctuated Date variety on PCGS slab labels.
Nope, not some CRO fiction, that’s actually the most likely explanation for this dot which was later lapped off the die.
But before it was, they struck the piece which we offer here as a lovely, original and especially eye-appealing Ch. XF example of this distinctive if accidental variety.
