Musante GW-88, Baker-85 variety, struck in Bronze. Engraved by Daniel Eccleston. 76 mm.
A classic early American medal with George Washington in a grand military uniform on the obverse, and a native American on the reverse within THE LAND WAS OURS surrounded by concentric tributes to Washington. According to author Neil Musante in his Medallic Washingtonia, the reverse was intended as “a subtle reminder to the people of the United States of just how tenuous was their hold on freedom”.
This is an important issue, and one that was known to have been presented to Thomas Jefferson, since his own example still resides at Monticello. Who knew? I did not.
The piece itself is a glossy and choice rich brown with hard surfaces and excellent eye appeal.
