Middlesex D&H-837 variety, Plain Edge.  This being the extremely rare variant Struck in Silver.

According to R.C. Bell’s Political and Commemorative Pieces Simulating Tradesmens’ Tokens 1770-1802, the central figure hanging from the gallows on the obverse of this piece is probably intended to be Thomas Pain, with Thomas Spence and Thomas Hardy, or Thomas Evans on either side.

The inscription on the reverse plays on the double meaning of Knave for a rogue and a Jack in a deck of cards (a reference to the Jacobin Club, a far-left political movement at the time of the French Revolution, though the term came to refer to all supporters of revolutionary opinions).

And while have handled several nice copper examples of this type through the years, we have had just one other silver one, that an impaired piece in an NGC Genuine holder we deemed not good enough for the website.  So instead we consigned it to a Stack’s sale in August of 2010 where it was cataloged with a description that included the follow sentence:

The silver strikes are of the utmost rarity and importance to specialists of this series as there are believed to be only three silver examples extant.

Which explains why that piece realized $3,450 in that 2010 auction even though it was cleaned and hairlined.

In comparison, this one is fantastic, with superb surfaces, lovely original blue-gray color, delicate golden toning and looks better than 63 to us.
