Breen 1076 variety. Very rare, somewhere on the order of just a couple of dozen known.

A resoundingly original coin, precisely the type which is likely to be ‘conserved and improved’ by someone in the name of capitalism. Our hope is that a collector will snatch it from his grasp (figuratively, by placing an order with us) and enjoy this coin just as it is.

With originality often comes a few flecks and a bit of mottled color and that is the case here, with the result being, in our opinion, a handsome naturally acquired patina.

This piece also has an abundance of faded mint red on both the obverse and reverse, more than we have seen on any other example of this issue and getting awfully close to what PCGS typically calls RB. To date, interestingly, that designation has never been applied to a specimen of this issue.

Noteably, there is a small retained lamination on the upper obverse which may be distracting to some, though it is as made and allowed us to definitively trace this piece to the offering of Mr. Stack’s collection a decade ago.

Overall, a nice example of this interesting type.

Ex-Stack’s March 15 & 16, 1995 sale of the James A. Stack collection, lot #34.
