Breen 1076, considered to be Rarity-5.
A stunning, pristine gem proof example of this rare muling of the Myddelton Token obverse with the Copper Company of Upper Canada Halfpenny reverse.
Pretty, very light brown with red undertones. The surfaces reveal faint die polish marks and one small area near 3 o’clock on the reverse rim which has retained its full original mint brilliance.
This specimen is pedigreed directly to James Watt Jr., principal of the Soho Foundry where this piece was believed to have been struck in 1802/3. Mr. Watt preserved one example of many of the company’s coins, storing them fastidiously in bronze holders, wrapped in fine old English paper with what appears to be his own personal description in black ink. This coin has remained as such, in the Watt family, undisturbed, for two centuries.
