Baker-32, W-11085 variety, the dated Penny with the bust of Washington facing right.  Considered to be Rarity-7 with just 9 specimens definitively traced according to our own comprehensive census data, and thus one of the great rarities in the Washington series.

Indeed, at the time of this writing (August, 2012), PCGS has slabbed a grand total of one example of this type – the present specimen.

Of the other surviving examples of this issue, just an uncertified specimen locked up in a significant east coast collection is a rival to this piece for finest known honors.  Followed by the AU Roper coin and a similar specimen impounded in the Massachusetts Historical Society.  From there, the census heads south, quickly, with the F/VF Robison coin, the rough, low grade Garrett specimen, a porous VG example sold by Stack’s in 2007, another in perhaps Good, and, finally, the Baker Plate Coin, ex-Steinberg, a piece with AU detail but 13 sizable and intentionally inflicted digs on the obverse.  And that’s it.

Making this well-pedigreed, golden brown piece with considerable reflectivity in the fields among the finest two examples known of this issue, and the only choice piece likely to be available for many years to come.

Ex Stack’s November 2006 sale of the Norweb Collection, lot #2041; earlier Breen Encyclopedia Plate #1258.

Note that this coin has been verified by CAC.
