Baker-34, W-11150 variety, Plain Edge. Considered to be Rarity-4.
An enigmatic issue in the Washington series, this type was struck from well worn dies to simulate wear and aid acceptance in commerce.
While all of these are flatly struck with scant detail, this is the sharpest piece we’ve seen, with as much of Washington’s shoulder epaulet visible as is ever found on this type. Unusually nice golden brown color too, for an issue often found dark and ugly.
This piece is tied with two others as finest graded by PCGS, with no mint state pieces certified, and, according to a handwritten note which accompanied this piece, was "Rated finest by [noted Washingtonia expert] George Fuld."
Ex Stack’s Bowers January 2013 sale of the Ted L. Craige Collection, lot #11522; earlier ex Richard Picker; earlier Abner Kreisberg’s April 1959 sale, lot #1207.
