Breen-1025, described by him as the Ornamented Edge and called "Very Rare" (and this time we think Breen got it right). While no definitive census exists of this variant, we would estimate the total number of survivors in all grades can’t exceed 20 pieces.
And this is is quite possibly the finest known of the lot, with a relatively sharp strike (for an issue that often looks absolutely horrendous) and lustrous chocolate brown surfaces.
This is also a desirable early die state with no trace of the break at the upper left corner of the clock.
There are a few planchet striations here and there, and the reverse is typically off center as seen on all of this issue, none of which are too distracting and all of which serve to identify this as the Roper specimen.
Ex Stack’s December 1983 sale of the John Roper Collection, lot #338.
