Maris 49-f, W-5445 variety, considered to be Rarity-5.

A pretty bold example of a tough coin, with deep brown fields and golden brown devices that neatly highlight this design.

This specimen just makes the cc for the variety, has better surfaces than many known examples, and is the nicest one we’ve had a chance to buy since the first Ford sale, where a slightly sharper example with similar coloring and perhaps a bit more roughness sold for $4,887.50 to a serious specialist nearly 7 years ago.

Ex Stack’s October 1989 sale of the Gilbert Steinberg Collection, lot #137, where it was described as follows:  "Far better surfaces than the Garret / Maris or the Taylor coins.  Certainly one of the top half dozen specimens.  Very Fine."
