Breen-980, W-5785 variety, one of the classic and most sought after issues in the American colonial series.
The obverse motif is the New York state arms, with the Latin legend EXCELSIOR (translated as ‘Ever Higher’), and an early use of E PLURIBUS UNUM on the reverse.
The coin itself is a lovely AU, all original, well struck, without a hint of the porosity or corrosion that plagues this issue.
Definitely among the finest known of this type.
Ex Stack’s May 2004 sale of the Ford Collection, Part II, Lot #308.
