Maris 53-j variety, considered to be Rarity-4.
A wholesome, totally original example of this distinctive and less commonly seen variety.
As an aside, you will notice that this is Maris reverse ‘j’, which is not to be confused with reverse ‘J’ as seen on other examples (including the ubiquitous Maris 14-J variety). You see, in naming each reverse die, Maris cycled through the alphabet once using all caps, then continued on using lower case letters (like this one) and finally moved to double lower-case letters ‘aa’, ‘bb’ and so forth.
And this is really a neat old piece, with wonderful chocolate brown color, lots of crust in the devices, a couple of skinny planchet striations, as made, running from top to bottom on the shield and some profound double striking in the letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM to complete the effect.
