Maris 53-j, W-5290 variety, No Sprig Above Plow type. Considered to be Rarity-4.
A neat issue in this series with an especially bold, high relief horse head bearing a seemingly full cheek, and an interesting reverse detail in the sprig beneath the left side of the reverse shield.
On page 416 of NEW JERSEY STATE COPPERS by Siboni, Howes and Ish, a Michael Soykes is credited with observing that, if rotated counterclockwise to 4:30 (as we have done below), the left sprig appears to be a stylized monogram of the letters N and J. NJ. Also interestingly, this detail is only seen on this Maris j reverse variety.
The piece itself is a smooth, all original, medium brown with choice surfaces pedigreed to the personal collection of prominent bygone colonial dealer Richard Picker.
Ex Stack’s October 1984 sale of the Richard Picker Collection, lot #226.
