Maris 73-aa, W-5430 variety, Plaited Mane type. Considered to be Rarity-4+.
An interesting variety that we have not offered before, and a purist’s delight.
This piece is boldly overstruck (as are most examples of Maris 73-aa), in this instance on a 1787 Connecticut Draped Bust Left, ET LIR, Miller 30-hh.1 variety, resulting in jumbled legends surrounding surprisingly clear central devices.
Choice for the issue, with pleasing color and nice detail on a big, bold, round planchet (which is not always the case on these).
Ex Stack’s-Bowers January 2013 Americana sale including the Ted Craige Collection of NJ Coppers, lot #11406.
