Maris 73-aa variety, Plaited Mane type. Considered to be Rarity-4.
A fantastic example overstruck on a 1747 Machin’s Mills ½p with the host coin boldly visible throughout, notably in the garbled legends that read REX ÆSAREA on the obverse and BRITAN S UNUM on the reverse.
This coin is actually listed as CC#1 of this variety in the magnus opus New Jersey State Coppers by Siboni, Howes and Ish, though we would call it CC#2.
At whatever ranking one chooses, this is a superb representative of this Maris number.
Ex Stack’s Bowers November 2019 sale of the E Pluribus Unum Collection of New Jersey Coppers, lot #6217; earlier Bowers’ June 1984 sale of the Dr. Stanley Sherr Collection, lot #3268.
