Breen-1137, W-5680 variety, considered to be Rarity-4+.
One of our favorite colonial issues, with the obverse legend IMMUNIS (Latin for "free from tribute or tax") COLUMBIA (the land of Columbus, i.e. America), which can thus be interpreted as "America free from tribute".
This type was once believed to be a pattern for federal coinage, but clearly this is an issue which must have seen circulation given the number of survivors extant with considerable wear.
And this is a very choice example, nicely centered with the date fully on the planchet (which is not always the case on this type) and with wonderful golden brown color. Cool pedigree, too.
Ex Stack’s September 1988 sale of the Herbert M. Oechsner Collection, lot #1236.
