Maris 16-L, W-4840 variety, Protruding Tongue type. Considered to be Rarity-2.
Always a popular issue, undoubtedly due to the intriguing name of this variety. And it certainly is apt, with a well placed tongue-like die break staring the viewer directly in his face.
Boldly so on this late die state example, with the pronounced rim cud and evidence of a sunken die in the central obverse.
And this is a very high grade for this type, with nice medium brown color and golden orange highlights in the devices.
