Miller 4.1-F.4, W-2355 variety, African Head type.
Waaaaay back in 1859, numismatist Montroville W. Dickeson used the name ‘African Head’ name to describe this variety in his famous reference The American Numismatical Manual, well before CRO was even a thing.
And throughout the intervening 164 years this has been a popular issue based on its charming, folk art-style design. Not an easy one to find nice though – making this unusually bold, sharply struck and well pedigreed specimen especially desirable.
Ex Bowers October 1980 sale of the Garrett Collection, lot #1338; earlier Col. James W. Ellsworth Collection.
