Vlack 14-84A variety, the only Machin’s type to bear this odd date, and as such the key coin for those looking to assemble a year-set of Machin’s Mills coinage. Considered to be Rarity-6.
This piece is typically struck for this challenging issue, with weakness on the upper obverse and reverse, but the obverse is pretty strong, the date is sharp and clear and, like many ex-Roper coins, the color and surface quality are really exceptional for a type that often comes dark, corroded, and plain old ugly.
This coin was inexplicably unplated in the Roper catalog, but its pedigree was confirmed (and noted) when it appeared years later in the Taylor sale.
PCGS has grade a grand total of two of this issue; a F12, and this coin at VF35.
