Baker-3A, Breen-1195 variety, Engrailed Edge.
Struck circa 1860 at the height of the fascination with Washingtonia, and perhaps even more popular today.
As an aside, we have always been partial to off-metal issues, be they US patterns, error coins, or, in this case, restrikes rendered in atypical compositions. Further, we feel the occasional silver piece adds interest and appeal to colonial collections which, by definition, always contain a preponderance of copper.
And this is an especially eye-appealing example of this type, with fresh original silver color, lovely pale blue and subtle golden toning and nice surfaces which appear, in our opinion, conservatively graded at the the 64 level.
Examples of this issue are sometimes seen dipped garish blast white, or, on the other end of the unhappy spectrum, toned in coppery brown-green hues that belie their silver composition.
We seek out the scarce few of this type which are absolutely original and unmistakably silver, as is this piece.
