Betts-602 variety, Struck in Silver. 44mm.
An important piece struck to commemorate the Dutch State of Frisia’s recognition of American independence from Britain, the first official acknowledgement of the sovereignty of the United States of America.
With an obverse depiction of Frisia shaking hands with Indian Maiden America while turning its back on Britannia, who while extending an olive branch has her lion ominously at her side and a snake in the grass at her feet.
The reverse inscription refers to the resolution of recognition.
The piece itself is a lovely, old toned, deeply reflective proof which comes alive when twirled in the light as best seen in our cropped TrueView photos. Cool roundel with ancient script included:
In all, a top notch example of a highly collectible piece with an early (actually the earliest) American theme.
