Betts-615 variety, struck in copper.
A simply magnificent example of this classic American medal.
Both the obverse and reverse are a beautiful, reflective dark chocolate brown with delicate blue and rose toning, the strike is spectacular, with every minute detail bold and clear, and the surfaces are all but pristine.
Overall, we agree wholeheartedly with NGC’s grading assessment, and believe that just a few faint lines separate this medal from an even higher grade.
Amazingly, given the extremely high relief strike, there is not even a whisper of cabinet friction on the highest points.
We have seen just one Libertas Americana medal that we would consider to be finer overall, and that is the piece permanently ensconced in the collection of the American Numismatic Society on display at the Federal Reserve Bank in lower Manhattan.
Unquestionably worthy of the finest cabinet.
