Vlack 24-72C, W-7740 variety, V in GEORGIVS type.  Considered to be Rarity-6+.

A fantastic example of this very tough variety, one which was struck from a ground-down obverse die producing a nicely balanced portrait of GEORGE III surrounded by mere vestiges of the letters in the legend, mated to a reverse that appears to be 15 points stronger.

Which makes grading this piece extremely difficult.  PCGS arrived at VG10 (evidently in comparison to Machin’s Mills coins struck from different and more detailed obverse dies), while we would suggest that it is at least F15 for the issue, if not stronger.  Indeed, this specimen can be traced to Stack’s May 2007 Henry Leon sale, lot #524, where it was sold raw and described as follows:

"Very Fine-30. A beautiful example of this rare and distinctive Vlack number, not discovered until 1981 and still extremely elusive. Rich chocolate brown with excellent gloss on the hard, smooth surfaces.

This specimen brought $13,800 at Stack’s that day 5+ years ago as a superb example of this issue, and nothing similar has come to market since.  Making this seem like a pretty fair deal at our asking price.
