An interesting coin.
High grade Sou Marques are seen from time to time on the market, some with attractive color, some not, some well made, some not.
But this is the first example of this date and mint we’ve ever seen in any condition; in fact, even the extensive collection of John Ford was missing this one.
The coin itself is a true, original unc., with lustrous silver centers and some pretty rainbow toning along the rims – another first for us on one of these.
The strike is relatively strong in the centers, but weak along portions of the rim on both the obverse and reverse. The planchet is also quite rough in these areas, as made.
Not the finest 64 we’ve seen by a fair margin, but more original than many. In all, a neat look and rare date make this piece eminently collectible in our admittedly biased view.
