Betts-390, Breton-515, Frossard-36 variety, struck in Copper with a Plain Edge.
First of a trio of neat French Colonies Jetons on our list, this bearing an obverse portrait of Louis XV, and a reverse and a reverse scene depicting the vessel of Jason and the Argonauts, but with a beaver pelt in place of the Golden Fleece. The legend translates as “not less valuable than the golden one” making the point that riches were to be had in Canadian fur trade.
The piece itself is a lustrous chocolate brown Choice Unc. with 18th century mint red in the devices. Neat provenance too.
Ex S.H. and Henry Chapman’s December 1890 sale of the Thomas Cleneay Collection, lot #296.
