KM-103 variety.

A lovely, original Choice Uncirculated early Pillar Dollar, with pretty golden and gray toning on both the obverse and reverse and ample natural luster remaining.

The overwhelming majority of surviving Pillar Dollars bear evidence of cleaning, or sea water salvage, or damage or worse. This piece is a stunning exception, with a beautiful 265 year old patina the likes of which we have not encountered before.

This piece was sold as lot #3151 in Renaissance Auctions December, 2001 sale of the Siegfried von Schuckmann Collection where it was described as follows:

‘Sc, patina. Brillo original. Muy escasa asi.’, and ‘Aunque es frequente encontrar este ano en mbc, las piezas sc son verdaderamente muy raras.’

There are a few diagonal lines present on the obverse as sometimes seen on this issue, which are not adjustment marks and which seem to have been present in the original planchet before striking. The effect is either charming or distracting, depending on your vantage point, but it is as made.

For those who desire originality, this is it.

Ex von Schuckmann Collection, as noted; earlier Superior Galleries’ December, 1989 sale.
