Martin Pattern 1-A, W-1366 variety, one of 3 definitively known.
A mysterious and very rare token related to the Rosa Americana series, bearing an obverse portrait of George II surrounded by GEORGIUS II.D:GRA.REX, and the Rosa Sine Spina ("A Rose without a Thorn") reverse.
This is possibly a coronation token, or perhaps a pattern, but has been collected as part of the Rosa series since its discovery.
The piece itself is a pleasing chocolate brown with a few bumps and bruises, though one can’t be too choosy with these; the Ford specimen was holed and plugged, and the only other we could trace is permanently impounded in the British Museum.
Ex Bowers November 1988 sale of the Silberman Collection, lot #6003.
