Noe-5 variety, considered to be Rarity-4.
A less commonly seen Large Planchet type, with a distinctive tree and spindly letters in the legends. For any of our readers who adhere to the Redbook nomenclature for describing Pine Tree coinage (and if you do, you may be the only one) this is a ‘Without Pellets at Trunk’ type.
The coin itself is a thoroughly original and pleasing coin-gray with some natural darker gray in the lettering and hints of golden toning here and there. The strike is relatively strong and even, and the piece is well centered.
There is a pronounced S-curve to the planchet, imparted during production on the 17th century technology roller-press used to strike these pieces. Some of this type seen today have been flattened for the benefit of modern collectors, though any original coin will exhibit a curve to one degree or other.
A nice original piece with this much (hands held far apart) character.
