Noe-17 Small Planchet variety.
A simply superb piece with exquisite pale blue, sea green and golden orange album toning as is almost never seen on Massachusetts silver coins of any type.
Also unusual is the crisp and very well balanced strike, with the design as well centered on a nearly perfectly round planchet as these coins ever come, with the outer beaded border nearly complete around both the obverse and reverse.
There are some small planchet pine tree shillings in existence in higher technical grade than seen here, but few could match the overall aesthetic appeal of this specimen.
Ex Stack’s October, 2005 sale of the Ford Collection, Part XII, lot #114; earlier plated in the Noe reference; earlier ex Carl Wurtzbach Collection and plated in the Wurtzbach catalog; earlier ex Chapman’s June, 1912 sale of the George H. Earle Collection, lot #1961; earlier ex Chapman’s June, 1882 sale of the Charles I. Bushnell Collection, lot #174.
