A spectacular and gigantic medal, 57mm in diameter (about 50% bigger than a Morgan Dollar) and as such the largest single piece we’ve ever offered.
And the design is larger than life as well, featuring a bold rampant lion on the obverse and an intricate crowned shield on the reverse.
Its impressive physical dimensions aside, this is an interesting and somewhat mysterious historical medal, possibly struck for an important attendee of the ‘Synod of Dort’, and while this may sound like some fictional event in a lame Star Trek movie, it was actually a series of early 17th century religious conferences arranged by the Dutch Reformed Church.
And there you have it.
Very choice overall, with lovely and amazingly pristine surfaces and a superb original patina.
