Newcomb-4 variety, considered to be Rarity-2.
An important coin, this piece was described as “MS70 minus”(!) by Del Bland and MS65 by Bill Noyes, and ranked tied for finest known by each.
And it is easy to see why, as it has superb luster and wonderful surfaces with about 60% of the original mint red remaining on the obverse, and about 15% on the reverse.
Ex. Goldberg’s February 2009 sale of the Naftzger collection, lot #368.
