A neat piece boldly struck over a 1797 Mail Coach Token.  Considered to be low Rarity-7 or high Rarity-6 as an overstrike, with perhaps 12 – 15 known.  Of these, there are just 2 or 3 known in unc., with this glorious red brown piece quite possibly the finest.

These are also known in well worn condition, indicating that they were struck for circulation (and thus making the appearance of a choice unc. survivor all the more unlikely).  I

mportantly, the date of the undertype makes clear that some contemporary counterfeits – like this one – were struck at least into the 1790s.
