Newman 104-FF variety, considered to be low Rarity-6.

An 1860s issue produced from copy dies and long since collected as part of the Fugio series. Indeed, this piece traces it’s pedigree to Henry Chapman’s storied 1906 sale of the Harlan P. Smith collection before eventually residing in Eliasberg’s holdings.

The common copper and brass restrikes are readily available in today’s marketplace, but silver pieces such as this are almost never seen.

The coin itself is a lustrous silvery gray with darker gray somewhat mottled toning, particularly on the obverse.

This is an issue we have tried to locate for quite some time and we are pleased to offer this well pedigreed example for your consideration.

Ex Bowers May 1996 sale of the Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection, lot #108; earlier the J.M. Clapp Estate; earlier Henry Chapman’s June 1906 sale of the Harlan P. Smith Collection, as noted. The original Eliasberg lot ticket accompanies this piece.
