This issue is often found with an horrific die break across the portrait, and is very rarely seen in the pristine state of this piece. As an aside, we believe early die state examples of all coins best represent the designs as intended by the original coiners and are most suitable for type, and so we seek them out when buying and pay a premium to acquire them – as we did in this instance.

The coin itself is an original and sudued golden brass color with shimmering underlying luster – a bit brighter and more lively than in our photo.

The surfaces are excellent, suggesting that one day this piece may well be conserved and enhanced – but it won’t be by us.

In all, an excellent example, tied for second finest at PCGS with just the lone MS64 Garrett collection specimen graded higher.
