A most unusual offering.

This is one of just two known silver urn Funeral Medals that are unholed.  99% of survivors are pierced at 12 o’clock for suspension, but this one is completely intact, totally original and most attractively toned in shades of rich gray and subtle deep blue and gold.

The only other unholed example we could trace was sold as part of Henry Chapman’s famed 1921 sale of the John Story Jenks Collection, lot #5565.  That specimen exhibits a very similar toning pattern and striking characteristics to the current specimen, though it appears to be a different example.

Ex McCawley-Grellman’s November 1997 C4 Auction, lot #531 where it realized $5,500 (at a time when nice Higley coppers were bringing $12,000); earlier ex New Netherlands June 1967 ’59th Auction’, lot #1085.
