Baker-3M, Breen-1197, W-10400 variety, considered to be Rarity-4.
An interesting issue which has long been collected as part of the Washington colonial series. Now, since some of you are undoubtedly wondering how a token with a Kangaroo on it relates to President Washington, let’s start at the beginning:
The obverse of this piece bears a proud Kangaroo beneath MELBOURNE, with 4 lines in exergue reading W.J. TAYLOR MEDALLIST / TO THE GREAT / EXHIBITION / 1851, referring to the Great Exhibit in London that year, a sort of World’s Fair with cultural and industrial exhibitions in which Australia was evidently represented.
The reverse depicts Seated Liberty beneath UNITED STATES, a die that was used as the reverse of a number of popular Washington Tokens (hence the connection).
The piece itself is a pleasing medium brown with old toning on the obverse and reverse.
