Breen-1169, without the script ‘D’ on the upper obverse.  Perhaps low Rarity-7 per our own research of this type.

The Albany Church Penny was described by Joel Munsell in 1850 in ‘The Annals of Albany’ as follows:

"On the 4th of January 1790 the Trustees of the First Presbyterian Church resolved that one thousand coppers be stamped ‘Church Penny’ and placed in the hands of the treasurer, for the purpose of exchanging with the congregation at the rate of twelve for one shilling, in order to add respect to the weekly collections."

Most have long since been lost, and today less than a dozen pieces survive of each variety.  Of those, this is one of the finest known, all original, with rich brown color and the word CHURCH and script PENNY clear and bold.

The last example to sell in this grade was a ‘With D’ variety at Heritage in 2007 which realized $74,475.
