Breen-1021 variety, struck on a Thin planchet with a plain edge.  Estimated by us to be High Rarity-5 or so.

And this is an all original, light chocolate brown example of this enigmatic issue, one of just 3 or 4 we have ever seen that are struck from the earliest state of these dies with no trace of a break at the top of the clock and no evidence of die bulging. Indeed, this coin is about as well and evenly struck as these come, with full legends and central detail on both the obverse and reverse.

There are a few trivial planchet issues, as made, on the right obverse, but nothing in the way of post-minting marks or damage, and on balance this is a very nice example for type.

We note that there is a very shallow straight clip at 1 o’clock, and the reverse die is aligned at 90 degrees to the obverse, both of which uniquely identify this piece as the Picker specimen of this issue.

Ex Stack’s October 1984 sale of the Richard Picker Collection, lot #272.
